We try to have a mix of indoor and outdoor activities:
- We usually go camping about 4 times a year. This year we were in the Ahrtal, in the Brexbachtal close to Koblenz, in Antwerpen for Intercamp, in Normandy for a ceremony on the D-day beaches and in Lelystad on the Eiselmeer
- We work on various merit badges. In particular, we try to insure that all the boys get the first aid merit badges and the swimming merit badges early. Past merit badges have included the Eagle required badges such as camping, cycling, and swimming, artistic merit badges such as photography and music, science merit badges such as astronomy and nuclear science as well as technical merit badges such as aviation and wood working
- We actively participate in the scouting and overall community. We have gone to the last 6 Intercamps, have active members in the order of arrow fellowship, and participate in community project such as building a pond in Brexbachtal
- We track the advancement of our boys, but also insure the overall quality of the program. Generally speaking, a boy should be able to reach first-class scout after about 1 1/2 to 2 years. After this, he increasingly has to work on the harder Eagle merit badges on his own while acting as a leader in the troop. This process culminates in an Eagle project done as part of the troop after 4-6 years (has to be completed before the boy turns 18). Even without reaching the Eagle rank, a scout can learn much about leadership, interacting with a group and about interesting merit badges and the outdoors as part of Troop 56
